I shoulda known better... back, back, way back when I was preggers with Brin and I saw that lovely, oh so soft toddler size duvet cover at Pottery Barn Outlet, but it was only available in blue that I was having a girl and I shouldn't get it. But it was cheap and I figured that it was almost periwinkle and IF I did have a girl it could probably go both ways... Did I mention how oh so soft it was, and that it was cheap? I bought it, and cuddled it sometimes when I was still preggers.
When the baby was born, I shoulda known better than to put this gigantic oh so soft duvet cover in her crib to cover her. Being the fourth kid, I understand that they will latch on to any lovie that you offer to them at a young age. I basically hand picked the older three's lovies; Cole clung for his life to a little brown, nappy haired bear, Avery wore the ears out of a pink bunny blanket, and Emi sucked and sucked on the edges of her beary beary which she still carries around and makes us search for at night. So I shoulda known that Brin would become attached to this oh so soft blanket from Pottery Barn... Did I mention that it is also GIGANTIC??? She loved it so much. When I would take her up to bed, she would giggle when she held it. She is an absolutely amazing sleeper and I'm sure its due to the oh so soft blanket and not my amazing parenting skills.
Now that Brin is capable, she goes up and gets the blanket out of her crib, wants to bring it everywhere... But it is so large that she has to wrap it around herself to carry, she trips on it and has fallen down the stairs twice while toting it around. Its a nightmare to bring out of the house, it gets stepped on and dropped and we can't easily fit it anywhere! I hate the oh so soft, boy blanket... I tried to substitute if for a pink princess blanket that was almost as soft, but no luck. I bought her a bear just like Emi's, but nope!
Then my brilliant friend had an idea... why don't you make the giant blanket into little blankets... Duh! So we did blanket surgery yesturday. Right in front of her eyes, I folded the duvet in half and cut right down the middle. She about freaked. I turned it inside out and sewed up the opening, turned it right side out and gave it to her. She giggled and cuddled it. Yeah!! Then I took the other half and cut it half to make 2 even smaller blankets. She was so excited to have multiple blankets, and I'm so thrilled to have a more managable lovie for her... We are down to one binkie and I'm toying with it having surgery today, if the blanket transition was this easy maybe binkie transition will be a breeze.

smart move Julie!! When she loses one you might need to make more smaller blankies.
